From Buttermilk Mountain to the unbelievable afterparties, the X Games lived up to both its reputation in talent and entertainment. The roads were rough heading up into the hills, but if you didn’t make it, Metromix was there to soak up all the fun of the biggest winter sporting event of the year.

Powder and pleasure in Aspen
Hanging on sweet Buttermilk Mountain for the X Games competition

Aspen, home of the Winter X Games, was the place to be this past Jan. 22-25. The Winter X Games 13 brought top athletes from around the world together for an annual snow sports showdown. The weekend was stuffed with action-packed events: four days of back-to-back ski, snowboard, and snowmobile competitions at Buttermilk Mountain at Aspen / Snowmass. Four days of high speeds, flashy tricks, and giant jumps. That is, four days of “oohs” and “aaahs” sure to leave any onlooker with a gaping mouth. It’s not as easy as it seems on the new Shawn White video game. There was hardly a moment to breathe—though riders seemed to have enough time to make a short telephone call when boosting out of the 22-foot SuperPipe. Some athletes laid down the law, and some got schooled. That’s not to say, they’ve changed the rules a little bit this year. Viewers are now trusted as the supreme judging authority for some competitions and were asked to cast their votes via text message. The times, they are a changing. Luckily, like any good event, the free schwag was abundant. We’re talking food samples as well as a colorful assortment of posters, cowbells, Mohawk head pieces, and taco hats. You just can’t live without a taco hat.

Pennywise rocks out
A penny for plenty of party

The Winter X Games slopestyle course delivered hit after hit. So did Pennywise at the free concert Saturday night. Just what any man or woman wants after watching the pros jump, spin, grab, and land…a little punk rock! Screaming fans rocked out to Pennywise, hands in the air—they just couldn’t get enough. Pennywise performed a number of classic covers and original hits at the base of Aspen Mountain. The concert was part of Aspen Ski Company’s Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series, and a worthwhile pause from all the X Games action.

All about the afterparty
The Monster Bash atop Aspen Mountain

The only thing better than partying like a rockstar, is partying like a speed-loving, spin-throwing, back-flipping, action sports monster. These guys go BIG. The Winter X Games crowd overflowed into Aspen after dark. It was afterparty after afterparty: From over-the-top excusive house parties to an impressive bar scene—let’s just say, it’s all about the people you know and the places you go! Check out what went down on top of Aspen Mountain at the Monster Energy Drink party (including appearances by X Games athletes like Jenny Jones and Andreas Wiig and a private performance, “just to get by,” by Talib Kweli)!
