Laurent's Wedding: Nimes, France

After two fast days in Paris, I head to the South of France, to attend my good friend Laurent's wedding party! While he and his wife, Lydia, officially tied the knot in Switzerland earlier in the week, they saved a tux and wedding gown for the celebration of the century in the South of France!

Don't they make a lovely pair!

Laurent is a dear friend of mine from Australia. We were roommates when we studied abroad in 2004. It is Laurent who set my travel bug loose. I have so many happy memories singing songs on road trips, sleeping in strangers basements / on humid beaches / in nasty gagaju-tents...giggling until our stomachs hurt, photographing the world a mile a minute. It's been many years since then, but we have found creative ways to "drop by" when we're in the neighborhood. We've since met up in Vail, CO, San Francisco, CA, Geneva, Switzerland, and, now Nimes, France! I'm so glad we've stayed friends all these years.

I had traveled thousands of miles to attend this party, and I was not the only one! Guests came from Switzerland, France, Syria, the US; we were quite a group! It was crazy I even knew a few of them, too, from past trips with Laurent! Hello Guillaume! Hello Bastien! Hello Alex!

Check this out: "Pumping times", just like the old days! (Bidi: You pump down, I'll pump up)

It was a memorable evening.
We ate. (foie gras)

We danced. (with belly dancing hip scarves, I should add)

We swam. (some, more willingly than others)

Morning came too soon.

But there was plenty reason to wake up.
There's nothing better than brunch, European style: Fresh bread, fresh fruit, great cheeses and great meats.

I might move to France for this.

Ever play cards with a European deck? Who calls the King a "V" card? It's quite hilarious when you're in the mood to ask "questions", remove the little green man, and adopt a British accent.

The next few days were at a leisurely pace. The hundred-degree heat was a big change for this newfound air-conditioned office chick.

When I wasn't lounging by the pool or dining al fresco (sipping wine at mosquito hour, mind you), I was able to catch a quick glimpse through the region.

We took two trips to the beach, one by car and one by horse!

Laurent is still crazy about kite surfing! And, of course, his wife Lydia is, too!

Remember, this is France. No tops. Little bottoms. Man or woman.

All in all, I had a great time in Nimes, the land of lavender and denim (Did you know denim was originally made in Nimes, thus the name de-nim)! Not only is it a beautiful place to reunite with old friends, is was also great spot to drink some Rose wine and Pastis!

I HEART PARIS

Bonjour, Paris!

It's been two years since TravelingJules last stepped foot off of US soil. As you can imagine, I was feeling the itch to pack my bags and fly far away, even if it was only for a short week. TravelingJules has an office job now, and she hardly gets 6 weeks off like the lucky Europeans, let alone a PAID day off. There's little time to flee off to foreign countries and that is a shame.

The clock was ticking, and I had exactly 8 days to get from Denver - Chicago, Chicago - Paris, Paris - Nimes, Nimes - Marseille, Marseilles - London, London - Boston, Boston - Denver. (I guess it didn't hurt to fly first class the whole way to Paris. There were no regular class frequent flyer awards left!)

With what little time was left, I wanted to climb the Eiffel Tower, saunter down the Champs Elysee, munch on creme brulee, and gaze at the Mona Lisa before heading south to attend a very special wedding.

I had my week cut out for me, but in true hardcore traveler style, I got it done. And it was fun!

To my great surprise, my dear friend Chiara (my first friend from Vail) booked a ticket from Lugano, Switzerland to Paris with just two days notice (Even I had only booked my ticket three days in advance). It had been 4 years since our last travel excursion to Budapest (for the Best Hungarian Experience Ever) and Oktoberfest (for one hell of a blurry time), but it didn't feel like that much time had passed. She was still the same great Chiara and it was so cool to see her again! I wish we lived a little closer!

We covered a lot of ground, stopping at the Lourve, the Orsay, and the Pompidou for a quick look in and out (one can only handle so much museum at a time).

We sang the French lyrics of "Champs Elysees" while skipping down the Champs Elysee. These are the only French words I know, apart from an unnatural amount of French cuss words, both of which I credit to my friend Laurent, the groom to be!

We climbed up the Arc de Triumph and down the Eiffel Tower.

It was pretty spectacular to see the Eiffel Tower with my own two eyes. Sure, it's a world famous icon that everyone has seen a million times on TV and in books. But seeing it in person is nothing to be modest about. It was fantastic. Absolutely fantastic, especially on a warm summer's night.

And while I'm not a huge fan of French food, it was pretty wonderful to enjoy my meals sitting in open air cafes that spilled straight onto the streets of Paris.

Au revoir, Paris! It's time to head down South...

New Camera

I bought a new camera! Sony NEX-5. It shoots 1080/60i HD video and performs really well in low light.

Great little point & shoot / SLR combo that still fits in my purse! :) Pretty sweet, eh?

Goodbye point and shoot, hello SONY NEX-5!

Had a fun little test run on my trip to France...Read on!
