Making "IT" Happen

Some people take comfort in knowing their path, knowing where you're going, how long it will take to get there, and knowing that whatever "it" is, that "it" is indeed possible!  But, sometimes, such evidence does not exist.  Sometimes, you just have to take a chance and blaze your own trail.

That was the case when I decided I wanted to be a travel video journalist.  It's not a job you ever see on Craigslist or Monster.com.  It's not a job that comes with a job description or projected path or even a desk.

But I, like the the other successful entrepreneurs gathered here had this in common: a very open-minded, passion-driven, risk-taking type personality willing to take a shot at having it all.

When my former ad school professor, Brett Robbs, invited me to speak in the Making "IT" Happen session during the first ever Cultural Caffeine series at CU Boulder, I was flattered.  The only problem, I haven't made "IT" yet, or have I?  I began to think about the idea.

As we celebrated Brett's retirement and new direction, we studied the career pathways of my fellow entrepreneurial CU grads.  I sat among many talented creatives, each offering honest advice to curious students, ready to graduate into the big pond.  Welcome to the 'real world'.

What did we find out?

Well, if anyone had recorded those moments, they could have written a book.  We covered a lot of ground.  I was pleased to look into the crowd and notice an attentive group, filled with many nodding heads and occasional scribbles in notebooks.  Even I, found myself taking notes.  We talked about taking risks.  Sometimes you do have to say no to the promising job and move to Korea and teach English or go to Costa Rica and go surfing for a year.  Those character building life experiences can be far more valuable than a year of work on your resume.  We talked about priorities.  Do you want to have a job and have a life outside of your job?  Do you want your job to be your passion?  Do you want to have a family?  A nice house?  A new car?  Do you want to be creative?  Do you want to own your own business?  If so, you probably don't want to own your own business.  :P  No matter how you answer these questions, the paths you choose will have consequences.  You have to live with those consequences.  So choose wisely, and you will be rewarded.  :)  We talked about money.  Sometimes you get big paychecks, and sometimes you don't see a cent.  What's really important to you?  We talked about making mistakes.  Sometimes, we mess up.  And sometimes, that's the best thing that could have ever happened.

These are not the things you learn at in a typical class. But here in the ad program at CU, we were all drinking the Kool-Aid.  Somehow, over the decades of like-experiences we all had in the J-School, it was clear there was a consistency in our thinking.  Our minds were exercising in a good way, different than you would learn in more linear programs, but a wonderful representation of the process to become a more active, more passionate, more well rounded person.  Good stuff, good stuff indeed.

A few things I did not share, but I will share now:

1. Be persistent. Be present. Never quit.

2.  Do what you love.  Be it traveling, filmmaking, or snowboarding, like me, if you find something you love to do, you'll never work a day in your life.  Money will come.

3.  Make a plan.  Screw the plan.  Sometimes you have to throw your plans out the window.

4.  Reach for the stars.  Follow the shiny things.  Elusive moments will appear, and when they do, grab hold of them at every opportunity.   It may not make sense.  But in time, those stars will form a beautiful constellation, and it will all make sense.  Your path may not be a straight line.  Embrace that.

5.  Build alliance with people you admire, people who are smarter than you.  They will inspire you, and teach you and challenge you to become the best you can be.  Make friends with your peers, the people you can trust and can share questions with and confide in, people you can grow with.  These will be the people who will join you at the top.  Get to know the people who admire you, those who follow your footsteps, those who look up to you.  These will be the people you can help along the way.  They will be forever grateful for your gift, and they will give you the humility when remembering how far you've come.

Thanks, Brett, for encouraging us to observe the world--my observation journal was a fun opportunity to step back and spy on life.  Thanks, Brett, for daring us to think differently, to appreciate the good and bad ideas, get beyond those first level thoughts, and push ourselves to dig deep.  Thanks, Brett, for bringing lots of color into our day to day lives, reminding us to be different, be yourself, just as you did with your undeniably fashionable ties!  Thanks, Brett.  Best of luck in your new direction, we hope we can return the favor and inspire you during this next chapter of your life!

Poutine Train Reunion

Another last-minute decision to NYC!  What's not to love about an impromptu stint in the Big Apple.  Now, this is just the kind of "rest" and "rejuvenation" that I needed, a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants weekend with all my favorite travel bloggers!   This special community of filmmakers, eclectic as we may be, are striving to be one tight knit community.  We are a small one, but a strong one!  I much enjoyed sitting at the roundtable discussing ways we can make our industry a better one.

Pretty Lil' Mudders

It's not everyday that you get the chance to get down and dirrrrrty!
When my friend Julie invited me to come play in the mud, I had to say YES!  Are you kidding?

This real life obstacle course turned out to be quite a riot, with mud pits waiting around every corner.  There were hurdles to jump over, benches to crawl under, giant bouncy tents that dropped you into a muddy pool, swampy puddles to charge through, spiderwebs to climb over, and plenty of photo ops!  If only we could skip the whole 5K thing.  :P

When it comes to the muddy challenges--BRING IT ON!

Thanks, gals, for making this happen!

Do you think anyone wants my number?  :P

Time for a TEAM PHOTO!
Before...

and after...

What a fun day with the girls, and I'm so happy I could to help raise money for kids with cancer.  This is a very important cause.  To learn more, checkout the Lozilu website for events around the country: http://lozilu.com/?gclid=CMzJyPTu77sCFcpDMgod6XEAkg

New York. New York.

And so, we meet again.

Flying into New York City feels a little bit like coming home.   Though I've never actually lived here, I've been here enough to kinda have a sense of what I'm getting myself into.  I've done all the touristy stuff: I've seen a show on Broadway, been to the statue of Liberty, been mesmerized by Times Square, done a pizza tour of Brooklyn, shopped 'til I dropped in West Village and Soho, strolled through Central Park, had some grub in K-town…and while I haven't covered everything (and who would even try), I am blessed to know my way around the Big Apple.  But what's wonderful about that, is that there is no pressure to see and do a thing, which is one thing I do love about travel.

Sitting in a coffee shop all afternoon returning emails and polishing up some edits is just fine.  Wandering through K-town to grab lunch before a meeting, totally cool!  No need to make a big deal about it!  I absolutely am OK with that.  And so, New York City, while I know you have so much to offer, I'm just gonna go about my business and enjoy the city as any other busy New Yorker would this time.

The highlights of the trip were of course, the people!

While in NYC, I saw my buddy Jordan, who kindly let me take over her boyfriend's 'man cave' while I was in town.  She took me shopping around Cobble Hill, and we ate the most DELICIOUS pizza at Table 87.  She would probably kill me if I posted the CUTE photo I took of her off guard, and so I will save that for another day.

I got to see my video mentor, Michael Rosenblum!  It's always so cool to connect with him.  He's the one who planted the idea in my head that hey, you can be a travel video journalist!  People are doing it.  You can do it too.  And so I did.
I saw my buddy Court Scott--the beautiful face of Travelocity's Let's Roam web series.  She knows how to get it done, and she does it so so well.  Her determination to get a travel series, and the beautiful work she produces says it all.  See for yourself!

I also saw my tv co-star Filipe from OutsideTV's The Final Cut!  He's so awesome!  Whether we're hiking in the snowy backcountry or having an impromptu picnic overlooking the city, Filipe has just the zest for life that I look for in my favorite cohorts.  His funny filmmaker intro video is only the beginning...

This badass has a pretty cool gig here in NYC and get's paid to travel often and make cool shit.  No wonder we are buddies!

Despite my busy week keeping up with my work, while meeting friends here and there, somehow, I made it to the church on time...

The whole reason I am here in NYC is to celebrate the D-Team!  My buddy Dave is marrying the love of his life!  Even though he promised me in a college dorm room once that we would get married when we turn 30 if we are both still eligible, well, I'm pretty happy with the way it all turned out.  :P  I really cannot imagine two people I like more than Dane & Dave, and it's so exciting to see them make it official!  For so many reasons, I am so proud of them.  I've seem them build a life together after ONLY meeting what, 11 years ago.  Right?  But still, no matter how long you've waited for the big day, when the time is right, you just gotta go for it.  And they managed to pull off what would seem like an impossible task to many, and they did it with style and grace.  From the charming Brooklyn locations, to the sincerely thoughtful & personal details, to the way cool WOW factor (What?  A bar on the elevator!), to the many wonderful people who came to celebrate, this was a truly grand event.  I'll let the pictures speak for themselves because words don't do it justice.

What a beautiful wedding weekend!

Three cheers to you!  :)
Wishing you only the best for all the beautiful years to come.

Where did summer go?

I woke up today and admired the Fall leaves that have landed on my windshield.  The sweet flavors of of chai tea and pumpkin bread taste all too good.  And then it dawned on me, HEY, what happened to summer?   In a New York minute, the everlasting sunshine and warm weather vanished.  Suddenly, the chill in the air and dark evening skies returned.  This is Fall, and heck, it's practically winter in my mind!  Where did the time go?  It just disappeared into the great abyss.  All the time I've spent traveling lately to warm climates has let me a little confused.
From the blue waters of Laguna Beach, to to the city streets of New York, this is my unplanned, mismatched, making of an summer adventure created by the momentum I call my career.  It's been fun, it's been wildly insane, and thankfully, wildly rewarding, too.  I would never ask for the pacing to slow down, as that is the true sign of success for a freelancer, but I also will not turn down the next opportunity to take a deep breath.  The moments are furriously fleeting but memorable all the same.

With new cities to explore and old cities to rediscover, here's a little recap:

DENVER

While working on a recent Travel Channel project featuring Denver, I parked on top of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to capture the most incredible timelaspe of the sun setting behind the mountains beyond the Denver skyline.  AMAZING!  I can't think of a prettier place to watch the sunset.

The FUN. concert at Red Rocks amphitheater was a wonderful splash of summer!  My buddy Keira and I made a spontaneous decision to attend just a few hours prior, and boys, we did not look back.

Talk about a summer of industry parties!  I got to hang out at the pool at Taxi, which is uh, made from of a train freight car!  These guys are so artsy, I love it!  I snuck in a sneak peek of the city from high above in the D&F tower...and then dived down into the basement to see Lannie's Clocktower Cabaret--what a fun spot for a show.  I *may* have performed there once for belly dance performance.  :P  Having seen the kayakers at Confluence Park many-a-time, I finally got the chance to try it out myself!  The guys at Confluence Kayaks took good care of us.

To me, summer means BBQ parties and evenings on the porch with good friends.  Lucky to squeeze in a few of these nights between travel gigs.

Elena sure knows how to throw a party.  She is an amazing party planner.  I would hire her any day.

Rach & David's visit to Denver reminded me that you're never too old to crash someone else's birthday party (especially if it's YOUR birthday, too), balance drinks on your head, and dare some random guy to take off his shirt.  Winning!

And…with Denver as a destination, I must admit, I am honored to be a local at Uncle...a new restaurant in Lo-Hi that serves up the most amazing ramen noodle bowls!  Believe it or not, they taste even better in the company of good friends.  :)

Who's hair is longer?  Me or my brother?  It's a close call.  :P
And hey, it's always kinda cool to sit in the dugout at your own home field!  I've never seen Coors Field like this before!

SEATTLE
Root Sports sent me on assignment to Seattle to capture mariner's fans in their true colors.  Step #1, buy (just a few) props!

I had a blast catching fish at the World Famous Pike Place Market.  It only costs a fortune to bring your cameras in here on official business.  The guys at Pike Place Fish were a riot!  They even let me have a go!  Luckily I did not let the fish slide down my shirt like the woman who followed me...ewweeeee!!!

Seattle is all about seaplanes!  Had to give this a go, too.  For filming, of course.  We were lucky to have blue skies and sunshine everyday.  I guess that's not a typical sight for Seattle.

And hey, why not slap on a hard hat and neon vest to get some great action shots.  The construction site was pretty impressive.  So THAT's how they build floating bridges.  Who knew.

PORTLAND
As any Denverite would agree, Portland comes from the same family of laid-back, healthy, nature-loving cities.  I read the 'This is Portland' book on the plane home and enjoyed the interpretation of what I'd seen with my very own eyes.  Between the coffee shops, food carts, bikes and the beer, I'd say it was a pretty successful trip.

I had a little run-in with friends Gone With the Wynns, who joined me for some delicious homemade ice cream at the original Salt and Straw.  These guys know how to have FUN.  A few other meet-ups with my buddies from college, Sarah and Rach, and their loves, made this trip quite memorable.
You can't come to Portland without a visit to VooDoo Doughnuts.  We may have stopped by twice.  Luckily, Denver, you're getting one soon on Colfax, although, I can't promise they will make you a customized doughnut of your favorite soccer player.  Actually, they probably would.

MINNESOTA

Family reunion at the farm my grandpa grew up at in Hanska, Minnesota.  I always look forward to a little family fun!  More on that here: http://www.travelingjules.com/2013/08/family-reunion.html

PITTSBURGH
It's a place I've often visited, as a kid, seeing the landscape from the backseat of a car windows, and enjoying the backyards and play areas of my relatives homes.  Returning as an adult on assignment to film a 'slice of life' in the 'burgh was quite a treat.  Wonderful reunion with The Hershey's and my mom's buddy Beth!

We were warmly welcomed from all sides.

There's so much to do!  We rode the incline, drank beer in a church, enjoyed the Pittsburgh left turn, met the Clemente family, you know.

While we covered a fair amount of ground, I do hope to come back and check out some of the cool artsy stuff we missed.

If you thought I was dangerous on snow, how about on ice!  Yikes!  Shooting and ice skating is not recommended.

One thing I discovered in Pittsburgh...as it turns out, I'm a little obsessed with pierogies!  YUM!  They are like heaven in your mouth.  I ate one everyday...whether on a plate with sour cream, topped on a burger or piled on some pasta, there was always room for a pierogie.  One place you gotta try is the Polish S&D deli in The Strip, where they make them from scratch.  Mmmm.

SAN DIEGO
Most people come to San Diego for the beach….Which I saw, for about 10 minutes.
While filming for Travel Channel's America's Scariest Halloween Attractions, I didn't see the light of day!  Walking backwards through two haunted houses, getting releases signed, conducting interviews, grabbing interesting B-roll, wrangling fun groups of guests, and getting those priceless moments of terror on tape, that was a job.

LAGUNA BEACH
I did manage to spend a couple days hiding out in paradise in Laguna Beach.
My friend Amy was a wonderful host and coworker.  She's carved out a little piece of paradise, all right.  We all want to be surfers.  But some of us are too driven to actually do it.  I understand.  While we can never be the "surfer," we can always pretend.  We went SUP paddle boarding on the ocean to see sea lions up close, and later saw whales swim in the same trail we swam.  It was so cool!  Can't wait to come back.
I saw Pole, my old roomie from Korea!  Ding, ding, ding, good morning.  That was the tune of the alarm when we were roommates once upon a time.  KOREA reunite!  I will always remember the time we got rejected from the club because he was a boy wearing shorts, so we switched pants in the alley, and returned with a vengeance.

ALASKA

Whales & dolphins and bears, oh my!  Who doesn't love a great whale watching adventure?  Got to explore The Last Frontier, discovering beautiful scenery by train and spending some quality time with my dad--thanks to a little show called Steve Harvey, and a little title of being the smartest girl in america.  :P  More on this adventure here: http://www.travelingjules.com/2013/08/alaska-last-frontier.html

VAIL
On assignment in Vail to capture the romance on tape for Honeymoons & Weddings!  Can't imagine a prettier place, can you?  More on that here: http://www.travelingjules.com/2013/08/travel-channels-rocky-mountain-romance.html

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS
Steamboat in the summertime is quite a destination.  A true getaway, with beautiful mountains and valleys to explore, and the BEST hot springs around.  A soak in the Strawberry Park Hot Springs will make all your worries melt away.
Ski Town USA is also famous for it's rodeo!  We got to enjoy the show and even sit on a bull.  Easy, tiger.

WINTER PARK
Winter Park is a serious playground, with lots of adventure activities at your fingertips.

Floating down the Colorado River.  A summer MUST!
I found a new favorite sport---MOUNTAIN BIKING!  I could really get into this.  My second run of the day involved greens, blues, blacks, dirt switchbacks, wooden boardwalks, jumps, the whole nine yards!  LOVE.  And you get to look like a cool power ranger.
Between the bowling and the "hoof" at a local Mexican Restaurant, I certainly enjoyed the after dark activities as much as exploring the area by day.
Hey, somebody's got to do it!

WHERE TO NEXT?
Ready for snow?  Here's my first glimpse at Colorado's snow-capped peaks.  Winter is coming…get excited!
